Qualifications & Experience

Scope of Job:            

 

Responsible for routine advisement, technical support, and conformance related to staff and guest health and safety (H&S).  Assist H&S leadership implement Merlin Group Health & Safety Policy, North America and local H&S standards, along with local regulations. Supervises in-house Workers’ Compensation and General Liability processes. Generally, understands and supports routine and well-known situations including quality control and retention of documents and records, inspection of facilities, processes, and practices, evaluation of prescribed controls effectiveness, communicating findings, respond to and investigate incidents, and effectively using a range of basic EHS tools and practices to aid the business to mitigate risk, reduce incidents, and drive conformance in all areas H&S.  Deliver non-high-risk H&S Training and participate in EHS projects as requested.

 

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

  • Hazard ID and Risk Assessment:  Applies knowledge to routine, understood situations by supporting the implementation and documented maintenance of routine Risk Assessments, controls, and processes in operations and emergencies.  Contribute to the identification of risk factors, analysis, and prioritization of H&S risks.  Advise on hazard controls for routine tasks. Collaborates with operational and H&S teams, to develop/review, and maintain procedures for safe and environmentally sound work.
  • Health and Safety Operations: Support the implementation of and monitor conformance with the regulations, Policy, and Standards.  Observe routine work against procedures and work plans for deviations which drive or introduce hazards.    Facilitate, monitor, and provide feedback on basic conformance to reduce hazards and impacts and associated risks, provide routine day to day proactive and collaborative technical advice and support to assigned business area regarding objectives.  Participate in emergency response and on-call processes. Stop work immediately for imminent hazards.
  • Support:  Build relationships as a “trusted advisor” to influence line managements’ understanding of conformance and performance expectations, support and motivate staff to demonstrate H&S leadership and foster a positive H&S culture.  Contribute to the preparation and delivery of OJT and formal training materials, review COSWPs, job plans, and other documentation for basic H&S matters.  Collaborates with H&S peers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), shares resource, fosters communication, and remains aligned to a single H&S vision and mission with one set of established goals and objectives to foster consistency of message for business partners.
  • Performance: Monitor the integrity and effectiveness of controls during inspections and investigations, with emphasis on critical/high risk controls, to identify actual and potential failures.  Supervise Workers Compensation and General Liability workflows while collaborating with finance, legal, carriers, peers, and corporate subject matter experts on processes and expectations. Monitor and provide feedback on conformance with H&S Standards, processes and audit closures. Prepare and use direct reading equipment to perform basic measurements and monitoring of work environment. Support periodic management reviews to systematically assess, monitor, and identify areas for improvement in the H&S management system, action plans, and culture.  

 

Health & Safety:

 

Employees are responsible for the safety of themselves, their colleagues and guests (where appropriate), in line with the Group Policy (HS001) and the law. In particular, they must ensure that they follow safe working procedures for all work activities that they undertake, and they must not use any tools or equipment for which they have not been trained.  Where incidents do occur, they must ensure that they are reported to their line manager and must cooperate with any investigation as appropriate.

Managers/supervisors are responsible for all aspects of Health, Safety & Security within their team, in line with the Group Policy (HS001). In particular, they must ensure that risk assessments have been carried out, that safe working procedures are in place for all work activities and that all employees in their teams are aware of the Group Health, Safety and Security Policy and their obligations under it. They must ensure that safe working practices are monitored, and that risk assessments and procedures are reviewed regularly. Where incidents do occur, they must ensure that they are investigated appropriately and that where necessary, corrective action is taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

 

Background and Experience:

 

Operational Management System 3+ years required: Direct day to day involvement in health and safety matters to gain a basic understanding and awareness of recordkeeping, training, inspections, audits, hazard recognition and mitigation, incident response, regulation, metrics and critical performance indicators, technical report preparation, sampling and monitoring, issuance and review of safe work permits; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Technical Hands-on Experience: At least 1 year with primary responsibility day to day for to inspection, investigation, hazard identification.

  

Education:

 

A bachelor’s degree in safety, Health or related field (or equivalent education and experience) required.

 

Physical Demands:

 

  • Ability to sit for sustained periods of time to attend on-site and off-site meetings, perform paperwork activities, travel and drive.
  • Intermittent and prolonged standing and walking to move about the resort site and interact with employees and third parties.
  • Finger dexterity is sufficient to complete paperwork activities and to use a computer.
  • Visual acuity is sufficient to read written materials, to complete paperwork activities, and to drive.
  • Hearing sufficiently to communicate with individuals in person and by telephone.

 

Work Environment:

 

Various inside and outside locations with varying temperatures and floor surfaces.

 

Other Job Requirements:

 

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends to support resort operations.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, safe driving record and be willing to utilize own vehicle for business purposes.
  • Must be an initiative-taker with solid working knowledge of applicable Health & Safety regulations,
  • Possess business acumen and strong communication skills to identify, analyse and act on information in a range of workplace conditions and ability to plan and evaluate approaches to sometimes unpredicted problems within a framework of existing operations and processes.
  • Ability to influence and work on a team by applying communication, engagement, and skills to promote and support change and utilize mentoring skills to develop capability of management team members.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft office, presentation development and delivery.
